Organization of oversized transport

Organization of oversized transport

Oversized transport, due to its non-standard size, must be carried out in accordance with the relevant regulations, which primarily regulate issues related to transport safety. What do I need to know about when organizing oversized transport? We provide you with the most important information.
What is oversized transport?
Oversized transport, also known as oversized transport, concerns the transport of goods, materials or machines which, together with the means of transport, exceed the standards for the size and weight of vehicles allowed to travel on the road.
This applies to vehicles which, together with the goods, exceed 16.5 m of the permitted length of the means of transport, 2.5 m of width, 4 m of height and 42 tons of total weight (this value also includes the weight of the driver or fuel).
For logistical and legal reasons, oversized transport is not carried out by individuals, but by specialist forwarding companies that prepare the itinerary, carry out bridge surveys and, if necessary, can also provide police escorts.
And what can be transported in this way in practice? Particularly agricultural machinery and construction equipment, yachts and aircraft, tanks, containers and silos, elements of wind power plants, steel structures. Depending on the type of goods, it is necessary to choose a different type of trailer for oversized transport.
Oversize transport regulations
At the outset, it is important to know that a transport company must obtain an oversized cargo permit, the types of permit being divided into 7 categories. They differ in height, length and actual total weight of vehicles, axle load, and obtaining permission to drive on bridges and viaducts. Authorisations may be granted for several days or months.
How to obtain them? You should submit an application to the district starost or Director General of National Roads and Motorways and present documents confirming the possession of a specific type of semi-trailer.
In some cases it may also be necessary to provide a pilotage service. The pilot may be an employee of a forwarding company or the police (in case of long and large rolling stock).
Offer of forwarding companies
And what do shipping companies offer in this respect? They have both low-floor semi-trailers and platforms that meet all the requirements for oversized transport. They organize permits for transporting heavy loads in the USA and abroad and, if necessary, provide transport not only by inland waterway but also by sea.
As mentioned above, they can prepare a pilot, also in the form of company assistance, MZK or police escorts. They also offer transport under cover of a TIR carnet, while the logistics department determines the necessary detours on roads with restrictions on vehicle height (e.g. through bridges and tunnels) and axle loads.
Oversized transport is an extremely complex and time-consuming undertaking, requiring many steps to be taken. Therefore, it is worth to contact a forwarder who has experience with this type of transport.
