Lightning protection system for a detached house whether lightning protection is needed

Many factors influence the risk of lightning strikes the house, such as the frequency and strength of lightning discharges, the type of building and the location of the object. This is statistically very rare. But is this a sufficient reason not to think about a lightning protection system?
Where do lightning strikes come from?
Lightning is nothing more than an electric charge. It is created in the atmosphere as a result of ionization by friction of ice particles in storm clouds. Ice moves, giving energy to the water. Landings can occur in dust clouds during volcanic eruptions or sandstorms. A potential difference is created between the layers of clouds and the earth’s surface, which causes the discharge.
Lightning is looking for the easiest way to escape, so lightning can be irregular in shape and extent. They are also accompanied by sound thunders. During a lightning discharge, gigantic energy is released. Most of it is converted into heat and ionization of air components in the lightning channel. Part of it turns into a flash and thunder, which is audible even from 30 km. The rest of the energy is transferred to the place where the lightning strikes on the surface of the earth. This is very dangerous for people and animals in the vicinity and can cause damage to electrical equipment.
Effects of lightning strikes
The most dangerous effect of an impact on an unsecured house is a fire. The electrical system and all connected devices can also be seriously damaged. Most often, overvoltages cause damage:
Electrical wiring,
computers, TVs and household appliances,
engines,
transformers,
alarms.
Lightning often strikes trees, breaking them. Falling branches can damage a car, a building or even kill people. Spherical lightning is very rare. They can get through a window or a chimney to the inside of a building, wreaking havoc. Repairing damage can be very expensive, so consider protecting it before it’s too late. It is worth using the services of a specialist company. Designing and installing lightning protection systems must be done professionally. Otherwise, it may have the opposite effect.
When is lightning protection necessary?
The regulations concerning the necessity of installing a lightning conductor are contained in the Building Law and in the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure on technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location of 12 April 2002.

The necessary lightning protection system needs to be installed in buildings: buildings built of flammable materials, mainly wood and related materials,
with an area of more than 500 m² and a height of >15m,
which have a tolerable risk value in excess of the standard.
Consult a specialist to check whether a lightning protection system is necessary in your home. He will assess the degree of risk on the basis of this:
The frequency of storms in your area,
lightning strikes,
location of the building in relation to other objects,
altitude,
surface, structure and roofing,
the number of people living in the house.
Houses located near tall buildings or in valleys do not need to be installed.
But even if our house does not require lightning protection according to the law, it is still worth to think about this solution. Especially when the house is of high value and we can afford this type of protection. It is not a very expensive expense, but it will provide us with peace during stormy days.
Lightning protection systems
If you have decided on a lightning conductor, you should commission a specialist company to install it. This way we can be sure that it will be done properly and efficiently. Designing lightning protection systems is the first phase of implementation. It starts with an inspection of the building and finding the best solution. You can use elements of the house structure, such as: roofing, reinforced concrete reinforcements, and even water pipelines. The construction of a lightning rod is quite a simple process, and the prices depend on many factors and range from about 500 to 5000 USD.
Traditional installation
For traditional lightning protection systems, horizontal and vertical conductors on the roof surface are used. They are connected to the earth electrode. The elements of such an installation are:
natural conductors – are metal elements, such as: railings, gutters, handrails, i.e. fragments of the house structure, through which electricity flows freely;
artificial conductors – wires made of copper, galvanized steel. Depending on the inflammability of the roof, they are placed in the appropriate height from its surface;
drainage pipes – placed on the walls, connect the pipes with the earth electrodes;
natural earthing – uninsulated from the ground, metal protective parts of objects;
artificial earthworks – pipes, copper or galvanized steel wires or wires. Used in the absence of natural earth electrodes.
Active installation
It differs from the traditional one in that instead of the lead wires placed above the roof surface, a mast with a special head protruding at least 2 mm from the roof is mounted on it.
