Smoking wood in a home fireplace guarantees a warm, relaxing view and a cosy atmosphere. And what is its impact on the health and safety of the household members?

A fire lit behind glass attracts and unites the residents of the house, helps to relax after a hard day, economically heats the rooms and looks beautiful. Heating with a burning fire was one of the first key human inventions. Traces of prehistoric fireplaces have been found on all five continents. The advantages of having a fireplace are often accompanied by doubts – won’t such a device harm the household members? The answer is simple. The fireplace at home is completely safe, provided that we use it properly.
What to burn in a fireplace with?
The fuel that is most suitable for smoking in a fireplace is wood. It is not only ecological, but also, when properly placed and heated, it guarantees a greater generation of heat and makes volatile substances not escape with smoke, but burn in the stove and then in the flue pipe. So they have no chance of getting into the room.
How to light a fireplace properly?
Which educates the public about ecological and economic burning in stoves and fireplaces: The pieces of wood should be placed in the fireplace in such a way that they do not adhere to each other along their entire length. When choosing wood, pay attention to its moisture content. The drier the wood, the better and more efficiently its heating value will be used.
Ventilation of rooms
The combustion process takes place when three conditions are met: The fireplace will contain fuel (preferably dry hardwood), oxygen and a source of fire. The room in which the appliance is to be installed must have a ventilation system: supply and exhaust or gravity (natural). The solutions proposed by the manufacturers of fireplaces make it possible to connect it directly to the fireplace stove, so that no oxygen from the room will be used for combustion.
The appliance itself, the section connecting the fireplace stove with the chimney and the flue pipe must be tight. This will ensure proper and regular maintenance and technical inspection of the fireplace installation.
It is advisable to equip the fireplace with an external air intake. This way, even when the windows are closed, the fireplace will be provided with sufficient oxygen.
Before you buy, check the quality
When considering the purchase of a fireplace, it is worth choosing one that already meets the most stringent EU standards of the so-called ecodesign. Then we will be sure that we have invested in the highest quality furnace, which with the use of appropriate fuels will not emit exhaust fumes into the atmosphere.
