How do I choose the right tractor?
Not every farmer can afford to buy a new machine, which has just left the production line, from the factory. The vast majority of farmers are condemned to older generation, more or less used equipment.
When buying such a tractor, it is worth paying attention not only to its price, but also to its brand, availability and price of spare parts. The size of our farm and the type of work we intend to do is also important. In the case of a large farm, there is no point in spending money on a tractor with a low-power drive unit. On the other hand, in the case of a medium-sized farm, the purchase of a tractor that is too large will entail additional and unnecessary costs, such as higher fuel consumption. So what should I do when buying a new or used agricultural tractor?
Western brand or USA?
Thanks to the opening of the borders, in recent years a lot of used tractors of well-known Western brands have appeared on the American market. Such tractors usually differ significantly from American tractors in terms of equipment – from the same or similar years of production. Unfortunately, very often these are also heavily used tractors, so sooner or later there will be a need to repair them. In the case of modern western tractors equipped with more complex electronic systems, possible repairs become extremely expensive. When we buy a less complicated European-produced tractor, its repair is much simpler and, as a result, much cheaper. Besides, on the market it is easier to get spare parts for American tractors and they are much cheaper than spare parts for Western brands. If we have basic skills and a little bit of knowledge about mechanics, we are able to fix many faults in simple tractors on our own. Repairs of tractors with a large amount of electronics are much more difficult and usually involve the need to visit a workshop or brought to the farm suitably qualified mechanic-electrician.
Independent repair or in a workshop?
Farmers who know at least a little bit about mechanics, will be able to easily repair many faults in tractors with a relatively simple structure. Therefore, if we do not intend to waste time and money on visits to workshops, a better choice will be to buy a relatively poorly equipped tractor – without many electronic systems. If we care more about the comfort of work, we choose a tractor with modern equipment, remembering at the same time that possible electronic failures will have to be repaired in the workshop by a specialist. Regardless of the chosen tractor model, we can still repair/replace damaged windows and gaskets on our own, as well as take care of the technical condition of some mechanical components of the vehicle. However, if we decide to buy a tractor of a lesser known brand, we must be aware that in the event of a major failure, we will lose a lot of time waiting for the delivery of parts. When we care about the independent possibility of repairs, such as the independent replacement of glass, we choose a tractor of a popular, well-known brand in the U.S. market. Thanks to this we will save a lot of time and money for a possible repair.
