Healthy teeth natural protection against infections

The results of the research presented at the IDWeek conference held each year in New Orleans clearly indicate the correlation between the state of oral health and the susceptibility of the body to colds, flu or pneumonia. These results inspired American scientists to conduct a separate study that could confirm them. Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University invited 26,000 people to participate in the study. It was found that participants who did not use dental services regularly were at greater risk of bacterial pneumonia than those who tend to visit the dentist twice a year.
Lungs: what do they have to do with teeth?
The question is: what is the relationship between the lungs and the teeth? The common denominator is Gram-positive bacteria. They can cause pneumonia by penetrating from the mouth into the body. Regular dental checkups allow you to see in good time whether unwanted bacteria are causing devastation in the mouth. Thanks to research, it is possible to remedy their proliferation in good time and prevent not only pneumonia, but also many less serious infections. It is worth knowing that harmful bacteria in huge clusters can take up to 2 kg of body weight of an adult. If the immune system functions smoothly, there is no infection, but in immunocompromised states they pose a serious threat to health.
Pneumonia – statistics
Pneumonia is quite common: 450 million people around the world suffer from it every year. This disease is the most dangerous for children (especially those under 5 years of age), adolescents and the elderly (75+). Very often it is a consequence of a milder viral infection, e.g. flu or sinusitis, which is favoured by negligence in oral hygiene.
How to avoid infection?
The basis for this is, of course, regular tooth brushing. But this is not enough. Dental floss should also be used, because bacteria accumulate not only on the surface of teeth, but above all in places difficult to reach, in gaps and dental plaque. In addition, it is worth visiting the dentist regularly, among other things, to remove tartar from time to time. People who wear dentures should use special preparations with a bactericidal effect and get appropriate containers (it is not recommended to store dentures in a glass of water).
