Foggy glass, how to fight it
Evaporation is the physical process of changing the state of aggregation of bodies from liquid to gaseous. However, when we talk about evaporation of car windows, we are actually describing the opposite effect. Water molecules present in the air are condensed on the surface of the glass.
Such a not very fascinating phenomenon can be observed mainly in the autumn-winter period, when steamed glass leads many drivers to brain evaporation. The thin layer of water that settles on the cold glass drastically reduces the light transmission, which makes it impossible to drive a car. This is not only annoying and time consuming, but also dangerous under certain circumstances. It’s different if you’re just starting the engine and you have to spend a few minutes dealing with unwanted H 2 O particles, and different if the glass evaporates while driving on the road.
There are a few ways to deal with this touching problem, as well as rules to keep in mind. First of all, you should regularly take care of the interior of your car. The vacuum cleaner does not bite, and upholstery washing is not an Olympic discipline. The cleanliness of the glass itself is not a meaningless issue, because dirt facilitates the accumulation of moisture. The key issue is not to allow the car to get wet. Where can water come from in a car in one of its states of concentration? The reason for this is, for example, snow, which we knock off our shoes making puddles under carpets. Moisture is also caused by defective gaskets or cracks. In order to have a dry car it is worth to ventilate it. Opened windows or open doors are a good idea not only in summer. Of course not in the parking lot, but in your own backyard or garage, if you do not want the car to evaporate completely. Even such a detail as the material of the car mats is very important here. So it’s best to use rubber mats at least in winter, because they won’t soak up water.
One of the most common causes of excessive evaporation of glass is improper internal air circulation caused by a closed flap. You should then find the flap and adjust its position, usually so that the fan blades are visible. This often requires the motor housing to be disassembled beforehand. You may find that the supply air motor itself has burnt down. The other thing that affects the evaporation of the glass is the cabin filter. Clogged or dirty, it prevents normal air circulation. It should be replaced periodically if you want a better atmosphere during travel. Besides, it is worth remembering to check the level of coolant, because its deficiency can also harm.
Often, the quick and effective answer to steamed glass is simply to turn on the air supply or air conditioning. However, if someone does not have air conditioning in the car or because of allergies badly tolerates its action, you can at least open the window. If it is cold outside, such a ride will not be the most pleasant. Drying the air and heating the glass helps to remove steam. Some cars have a parking heater or special systems for heating the windscreen (this can be seen in the delicate wavy lines), and even mirrors, which especially in winter turns out to be very useful.
The market also offers several accessories designed to combat unwanted steam. These are various types of moisture absorbers and special sprays, which can be purchased for a few or more USD. However, this is a weak method. Despite this, some drivers even use ordinary hair shampoos to lubricate their car windows. You may encounter another unusual way, where a small amount of gravel or salt is used as a car’s moisture absorber. However, the effectiveness of such treatments is questionable. On the other hand, just wiping the steamed glass with a sponge or cloth is a short term solution that eliminates the effects, not the cause, of the problem. It is hard to imagine safe driving (even slow) and holding one hand on the steering wheel and the other hand constantly wiping the glass.
