External evaluation of the car – what is worth checking before buying?
There will still be time for a test drive. What should interest us in the first place, if we are dealing with a used car that we are considering buying, is the assessment of its external condition. Making a decision only on this basis is obviously not prudent, but very often at this stage we can learn a lot about the past of the car and whether it is well maintained, or whether it is only thanks to a professional car wash that the pictures in the ad looked so good.
Of course, it can be commissioned to a professional appraiser, but a large group of drivers prefer to carry out the inspection on their own. In such cases, however, it is not worth to allow that we omit any of the elements that make up the external evaluation of the car, and there are quite a few of them – knowledge of what should be checked can be useful even the most confident driver.
Paint measurement and gap measurement
The first task that we will have to perform is to use the sharpness of your eyesight and a special measure of the thickness of paint. Why so much effort? Spending a dozen or so or tens of thousands of USD on a car we expect a clear accident history and a construction that not only has no defects, but also is able to provide us with an adequate level of safety. Each collision leaves marks, so the measurement of the thickness of the paint and the width of gaps between the elements of the car body is so important. We should be concerned about it first of all:
– bad fit of the body elements (they could have been replaced after the accident or their displacement took place at the moment of collision),
– a different shade of lacquer on the body parts (the car was lacquered for some reason),
– gaps between the body elements, into which we can insert a finger or having an uneven size on both sides of the car,
– measurement values of paint thickness, which indicate double coating or go beyond the scale (most often due to bending of the sheet which has been mudded).
Glass and lights
Checking the windows and lights can also tell us a lot about the condition of the vehicle and its past. Not everyone knows that when a car leaves the factory, these elements are always assembled from a single set. Therefore, different production dates or markings on the windscreens and headlights suggest that they were replaced. Why, after all, there was not a single word about it in the announcement? It’s worth asking the seller – especially when it comes to front and rear headlights, rear and side windows (front sometimes cracks as a result of contact with a stone from under the wheels of another vehicle). If they are manufactured in different years, by different companies and with different markings (including those related to approval), it means that the car had a collision or accident. In addition, the condition of these components is checked during the Periodic Vehicle Inspection, so it is advisable not to take on the shoulders of the additional trouble and costs associated with replacing them and bringing them to a condition that ensures the necessary level of safety and signalling on the road.
Tyres and rims
The wheels of a car are the only element that connects us with the road we are on. So it would be good if they were in good condition to provide us with the right level of safety. In order to achieve this during an external inspection, it is worth checking in this case:
– The tread condition of the tyres,
– that the tyre tread is worn evenly,
– condition of the rims (deformation, rust, etc.),
– that the wheels do not protrude beyond the contour of the car (this may indicate that the car is not allowed by our tuning law),
– any cavities in the tyres,
– whether each wheel is fitted with a tyre from the same company.
