Engine oils – check what you need to know about them
Without engine oil, no car can go. Therefore, the choice of oil should always be well thought out. In order to do this, however, you must have the necessary knowledge about them.
Functions of engine oils
Engine oils play a key role in cars. Oils prevent the friction of metal parts. Without an oil lubricant, the engine in the car would simply seize up. That would mean the end of the drive. An important function of engine oils is also that they prevent the deposition of any impurities. All because the use of the right oils keeps contaminants in the suspension. Importantly, the oils also distribute heat effectively. In other words, high-quality engine oils effectively extend the service life of car engines.
Changing engine oils
However, to ensure that all these functions can be performed, you must always change the engine oil regularly. Observe the manufacturer’s instructions in this regard. However, it is assumed that the engine oil should be changed every 15,000 kilometres. This is, however, a distance from the contract. Everything depends on the age of the car, and specifically on the mileage travelled. The higher the mileage, the more often the engine oil should be replaced. Owners of cars with diesel engines should also remember to change engine oils more often.
What kind of engine oils do we have to choose?
Various engine oils are available on the market. These can be mineral, semi-synthetic or synthetic oils. All of them have different properties. It can be said that mineral oils are the weakest. It does not provide sufficient lubrication. Therefore, mineral oils are used least frequently. Semi-synthetic oils are much better, but the most effective in terms of engine protection are synthetic oils. Synthetic oils should be used in all new cars. What is important, they do very well in both high and low temperatures.
What additives in oils?
Good engine oils should have additional ingredients to make them even more effective. These include, for example, components that form an active coating that makes the engine run much better under heavy loads. It is worthwhile for the oils to have dispersion agents in their composition. These effectively remove all harmful soot. In order for oils to retain their properties longer, it is worthwhile to include antioxidants and friction modifiers in their composition, which increase fuel efficiency.
